24. Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus
With the development of our society, the campus should no longer be an "Ivory Tower". It is necessary for college students to go outside to get to know the world. They should acquire knowledge not only from books but also from the society. Thus they can adapt to society more quickly after graduate from school.
Science and technology are developing rapidly with each passing day. Most students can keep themselves informed by watching TV, listening to the radio, reading newspapers and using computers. It's also good to take a part-time job, such as tutoring, or working in a restaurant. Any of these methods will enable students to get in touch with society.
Summer vacation will soon be here. I've already enrolled to be a volunteer to help others. I think I can do well. Although I won't be paid, the most important thing is that I can learn a lot about society.
25. Practice Makes Perfect
Practice is the key to success in all fields of activity. It is practice alone that enables us to build up speed and efficiency. When we accomplish something perfectly without wasting effort, this is the result of long practice.
Take the study of English for example. Only practice can enable us to spell words correctly and master the rules of grammar. And it is also through practice that we can become fluent in speaking and writing, there is no other way. Another good example is sports. Practice is the only way to become stronger and run faster. Besides, in team games practice is what improves our sense of cooperation and helps the team to win.
To sum up, there can be no achievement which is not based on a solid foundation of practice.
26. My Most Favorite Program
China Central Television (CCTV) today offers a great variety of programs to satisfy different needs and tastes. For example, the weather forecast is of special interest to farmers. For another example, the concert program appeals greatly to music lovers. The sports world attracts large numbers of sports fans. My most favorite TV program, however, is the news network.
The news network has several points that are worth mentioning, as far as its contents and features are concerned. For one thing, it covers news about important events at home and abroad. Besides, the news it provides is timely and reliable. Finally, broadcast in the evening during the so-called "golden time", the news network program reaches a wide range of audience.
As for me, I like the program chiefly for two reasons. One is that it keeps me informed of the state of the nation and the world at large, which is essential to a college student. The other reason is that, since the news covers a comprehensive area and is fairly brief, it saves me much time from reading other newspapers for current affairs. In short, watching the news network on CCTV has become an indispensable part of my daily life.
27. Advantages of a Job Interview
You may have a job interview first if you want to get a good job before graduation. For an interviewer, he may have a lot of interviewees to choose, and for an interviewee, he may also have many jobs to choose. Therefore, both the interviewer and interviewee should be careful about their decision. It is only through the interview that both of them can know more about each other.
On the one hand, the interviewer will make the interviewee know something about the job such as the property, the working conditions, salary, welfare, and ect. He may also ask the interviewee the reasons of applying for the job in order to know what he is. All these will help the interviewer to decide whether the interviewee is fit for the job or not.
On the other hand, the interviewee will try to introduce himself in order to leave the interviewer a good impression. He will make the interviewer get some ideas of his educational background, ability, character, interest and viewpoint of the job. Remember to show your confidence in yourself. All these help the interviewer to decide whether you are suitable for the job or not.
28. No Pains, No Gains
No pains, no gains. This is a proverb full of logic. If we are to reach the top of a mountain, we must climb it. If we hope to achieve success, we have to do hard and painstaking work. On the contrary, the less one pains, the less he gains. To do nothing is to bring ruins upon oneself.
Examples can be easily found to make a case for this proverb. A scientist may be well-known for his discovery. He is greatly rewarded for it and praised wherever he goes. Yet, how many sleepless nights did he spend doing experiments in his laboratory? No one knows. For a champion athlete, all the sweat proves to be necessary. Even a student's scholarship is preceded by hard work.
In a word, happiness brought by success goes along with sacrifice of rest, relaxation and entertainment. Gains and pains unexceptionally go hand in hand.
3)教材80页:写作练习“Jobs for Graduates”
Jobs for Graduates
Job hunting has always been a headache for college graduates. Though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. Most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation.
The reasons for this phenomenon are various. On the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. On the other hand, most graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the country.
I think the problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. First, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. Second, students' attitude towards employment should be changed. They should go to some small cities and country. There they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. In a word, if we pay much attention, the problem can be solved.
