　　1. irritate v. 使恼怒=annoy

　　His letter irritated me a little.

　　他的信使我有点恼怒。

　　2. jeopardize v. 危及=endanger

　　You jeopardize your job by being late often.

　　总是迟到危及到你的工作。

　　Soldiers jeopardize their lives in war.

　　士兵们在战争中使他们的生命陷入险境。

　　3. junk n. 废物

　　junk food 垃圾食品

　　词义辨析：junk, waste, garbage, rubbish, litter, debris,

　　junk: 指回收的旧汽车或大型机器，也指毫无实用价值，或破烂物体，但不指垃圾

　　waste: 普通用词，概念广泛，指任何被丢弃的东西

　　garbage: 主要指有机废料，包括厨房的剩菜剩饭或不能再用的食物。也可作引申用

　　rubbish: 普通用词，指任何成堆的、破损的、用过的或无用的东西，尤指弃掉的垃圾堆。也可作引申用

　　litter: 是四下乱丢物品的总称，尤指散落于地，有碍观瞻的废物

　　debris: 着重指分解、分裂或破坏后剩下的碎片，也指零散的普通废品

　　Junk is anything that has outlived its usefulness.

　　破烂货，是一些比它本身的用处还活久了的东西。

　　4. kidnap v. 绑架

　　Police have uncovered a plot to kidnap the President's son.

　　警方已侦破一起绑架总统之子的阴谋。

　　5. legend n. 传奇

　　According to the old legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome.

　　按照古老的传说，罗穆卢斯是古罗马的建国者。

　　The little girl is very interested in the old legend of immortal creatures.

　　小女孩对有关永生的精灵的古老传奇非常感兴趣。

　　6. legitimate a. 合法的=legal/lawful

　　He is the legitimate heir to the property.

　　他是这宗财产的合法继承人。

　　I'm not sure that his business is strictly legitimate.

　　我说不好他的生意是否全部合法。

　　7. liability n. 责任=legal obligation;不利条件=drawback

　　He admitted his liability for the accident.

　　他承认自己对这起事故应负责任。

　　Lack of education was a liability in getting a job.

　　缺少教育对找工作不利。

　　8. literacy n. 读写能力

　　I can't believe that he failed the literacy test.

　　我无法相信他识字测试不及格。

　　9. literally ad. 逐字地; 确实地

　　Don't read the report literally now, just skim through it.

　　现在，不要逐字读报告，大致地看一下就可以了。

　　Speculations about its nature have been going on for literally thousands of years.

　　关于它的实质的种种推测，确实已进行了数千年之久。

　　10. litter v. 乱扔
