  Sectio B

  Passage One

One of the primary materials used in the construction of buildings and roads is cement

a powder made primarily from limestone and clad.

Even though the ancient Egyptians and Romans used a kind of cement,it was not until 1824 that an English bricklayer develope

a cement strong enough for modern roads and buildings.

  While experimenting in his kitchen

the bricklayer found that a mixture of limestone and clad

that had been heated together formed a hard

stone like chunk as it cooler

When this substance was ground into a find powder it could be stored indefinitely.

When the powder was mixed with water

it made an excellent quality of cement that quickly hardened in sunlight or even under water.

  With only a few variations

this is how cement is made today.

  11. What is the main topic of the talk?

  12. Who developed the kind of cement that is used today?

  13. What was significant about the new kind of cement?

  Passage Two

In America, where labor costs are so high

"do-it-your-self" is a way of life.

Many people repair their own cars

build their own garages, even remodel their own houses.

Soon they many also be writing their own books.

In Hollywood there is a company that publishes children's books with the aid of computers.

Although other book companies also publish that way

this particular company is very unusual.

It "personalizes" the books by having the computer make the reader the leading character in the story.

Here is how they do it.

Let us say your child is named Jenny.

She lives on Oak Drive in St.Louie

has a dog named Spot, a cat named Tabby

and three playmates whose are Betsy,Sandy and Jodo.

The computer uses this information to fill out a story that has already been prepared and illustrate

The story is then printed with standard equipment as a hardcover book.

A child who receives such a book might say

  "This book is about me

the company therefore calls itself the "Me-books Publishing Company".

Children like the me-books because they like to see in print their own names

and the names of their friends and their pets

  But more important

"Personalization" has been found to be an important tool in developing enthusiasm for reading.

Me-books are thus helping a child to learn how to read by appealing

to that natural desire to see his own name in print.

  14. What is the subject of the passage?

  15. What characteristics does the company have?

  16. What's the purpose of the me-books?

  Passage Three

Every word has its own story.

  So does the word "Yankee".

Where did the word come from?

  What does it meat?

And how did it get into the language.

A number of people believe that the word "Yankee" comes from a Scottish word

  meaning sharp and clever.

But most experts agree that the word comes from Holland.

Many years ago the Hollanders who made cheese were called "John Cheese" by the German.

Then some of these Hollanders came to America in the Early 1600s.

They settled near the New England colonist.

The Hollanders were great farmers and they laughed at the colonist

in the north who tried to build farms in the mountain rock

And so the Hollanders gave their own nickname "John Cheese" to the New England colonist

In Dutch "John Cheese" was spelt J-A-N-J-E-E-S and pronounced "Yankees".

  During the American Civil War

that name "Yankee" took on a wider meaning.

The soldiers in the northern state

were called "Yankees" by the men of the southern army.

  During World War I

the nickname "Yankee" spread to Europa.

The word "yankee" was shortened to "Yank"

and the words "The Yanks are coming" brought tears and job

to the people of the Allied Nation

Today, the word "Yankee" is known throughout the world as another name for an American.

17.What did the speaker tell us?

18.According to most experts, where did the word come from?

19.What did the word "Yankees" refer to during the American Civil War?

20.What does the word "Yankee" mean today
